Scanning wrinkled, stained or damaged documents
· Scan quality
Life happens to paper — it gets rained on, crumpled in bags, taped back together. The scanning goal for damaged documents is legibility and honesty: capture everything readable, alter nothing.
Triage by damage type
- Wrinkles/crumples: smooth by hand, press under books for an hour, then light along the dominant crease direction. Local enhancement flattens the micro-shading impressively.
- Water stains: usually a tint with intact text — contrast enhancement recovers readability. Shoot slightly brighter than normal.
- Tears/taped repairs: assemble on a contrasting background, shoot, keep the tear visible — masking damage on official papers is falsification territory.
- Faded print: maximise light and steadiness; the pipeline's contrast lift is your friend, but truly vanished ink is gone (a lesson for scanning receipts early).
When the original matters legally
Scan the document exactly as-is and, if asked, note the damage in your communication (“original water-damaged; all text legible”). Offices deal with damaged paper constantly — a transparent scan plus honesty is the accepted path. What raises flags is retouching.
Preserve before it worsens
Damage progresses: folds tear, stains spread, thermal print fades. The scan you take today is the best copy that will ever exist — a good argument for the family digitisation project.
Frequently asked questions
Can I digitally erase a coffee stain?
On your own notes, no one cares. On anything official or evidentiary, do not alter content or appearance beyond standard lighting normalisation — a stained-but-genuine scan beats a clean-but-questionable one.
The page is in pieces. One photo or several?
Assemble the pieces and shoot the whole; add close-ups of any hard-to-read joins as extra pages. Multi-page PDFs are made for this.
