Scanning curled, rolled and folded pages flat

· Scan quality

Software straightens perspective — the page's tilt — brilliantly. It cannot iron a cylinder: paper that curls up from the table bends the text lines themselves. The fix happens before the shutter.

Fast physical fixes

  • Receipts: draw the strip gently over a table edge (like curling ribbon, in reverse) — the thermal curl relaxes in seconds.
  • Tri-folded letters: reverse-fold each crease lightly, then press under a book for a minute; shoot with light along the creases.
  • Rolled certificates/posters: reverse-roll loosely for a few minutes, then weight all four corners.
  • Weights that don't intrude: coins, phone-box corners, glass edges — placed just outside your intended crop, or on blank margins.

Shooting what remains

A slight residual bow is fine: keep the camera square to the centre of the page and let the enhancement's local lighting correction eat the gentle shading the bow creates. What to avoid is shooting along the curl (the far end shrinks and blurs) — face the bow head-on.

When corners must be held

Fingers holding a fighting page are normal — keep fingertips on the outer margins and crop them away in the editor. ToPDF's corner editor with the magnifier makes an exact fingertip-excluding crop trivial.

Frequently asked questions

Can I iron paper flat?

For ordinary modern paper, a cool iron under a cotton cloth can work — but never for thermal receipts (heat erases them!), old documents or anything precious. Weights and patience are safer.

The fold line still shows as a shadow — problem?

A faint fold line is cosmetically normal and universally accepted on scanned letters. Light running parallel to the fold minimises it.
