Scan book pages to PDF without a book scanner
· Document guides
Sometimes you need pages from a book — a recipe, a cited chapter section, a workbook page for class. Books fight scanning with their curved spreads, but a phone plus technique gets remarkably flat-looking results.
One page at a time beats spreads
Photographing the open spread bakes both pages' curvature into one image. Instead:
- Open the book and press one page flat, letting the other side rise as it wants.
- Hold the pressing fingers at the margin, outside the text area.
- Photograph just that page, square-on; repeat for the facing page.
- Scan the photos in ToPDF — each page is cropped past your fingers to the text block and straightened.
Taming the spine curve
Text near the gutter bends and shrinks. Mitigations: open the book flatter than usual against a table edge, press closer to the gutter, or accept a slightly tighter crop that stops before the worst curve. Perspective correction handles the page's tilt; a strong cylindrical curl at the spine is a physical limit.
Copyright common sense
Copying pages for your own study or backup is broadly tolerated in many places under personal-use/fair-dealing ideas; sharing scanned chapters publicly is not. Scan for yourself; buy or link for others.
Frequently asked questions
Best page order for a chapter?
Photograph in reading order and batch-select; the PDF follows selection order, and the thumbnail strip lets you fix any slips before download.
Old yellowed paperback pages?
The enhancement whitens aged paper nicely while keeping the print dark — usually more readable than the physical page in dim light.
