Scanning small text so it stays readable

· Scan quality

Small text is a pixel-budget problem: a character rendered by four pixels is a smudge, by ten it's a letter. You control the budget with distance — and, in extreme cases, by splitting the page.

Spend your pixels on the text

  1. Fill the frame with the page — every centimetre of table in frame is resolution thrown away.
  2. Get as close as focus allows (phones typically focus down to ~8–10 cm). If the preview won't sharpen, back off a touch.
  3. Steady matters double: small text shows tiny motion first. Prop the phone if you can.
  4. Verify by zooming the scan to the smallest critical line before sending.

The sectioning technique

For dense fine print that truly must be legible (contract clauses, leaflet dosages): scan the page normally for context, then shoot the critical block close-up as an extra page. Two pages, zero ambiguity — recipients prefer it to one straining page.

What enhancement adds

ToPDF sharpens adaptively when a page is soft and boosts local contrast when print is faint — small text gains real legibility from both. It cannot invent strokes that the sensor never captured, which is why the framing rules above are the main event.

Frequently asked questions

Is the phone’s 2× / 3× zoom good for documents?

Optical zoom (real tele lens): yes, it’s equivalent to getting closer. Digital zoom: no — it crops the same sensor; step closer instead.

Why does text look fine on screen but fuzzy printed?

Print reveals resolution screens forgive. If a scan must be printed and read, check it at 100% zoom first — that approximates paper.
