Why document scans come out blurry (and the fixes that work)
· Scan quality
Blur is the one defect enhancement can't truly reverse — sharpening lifts edges, but destroyed detail stays destroyed. Fortunately blur has exactly four causes, each with a visible signature and a simple fix.
Diagnose from the photo
| What you see | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Everything smeared in one direction | Motion (hands moved) | Brace or prop the phone; exhale-then-shoot |
| Uniformly soft everywhere | Missed focus | Tap the document on screen; wait for the focus lock |
| Centre fine, edges soft | Too close / lens limits | Back off slightly; let crop trim the margin |
| Hazy, low-contrast “glow” | Dirty lens | Wipe the camera — the most skipped fix in phone photography |
The steady-shot routine
- Wipe the lens on your shirt. Seriously — pocket film is real.
- Elbows against your body, or rest the phone on a mug/stack of books above the page.
- Tap the middle of the document to focus; watch the text snap crisp in preview.
- Hold still through the shot — on darker scenes phones expose longer than you think.
Verify before you leave the scene
Zoom the photo (or the scanned page in ToPDF — tap the thumbnail, view large) and read the smallest line that matters. Legible → done. Fuzzy → re-shoot now while the paper is still in front of you. Thirty seconds of checking beats discovering it during an upload deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Can ToPDF’s sharpening fix a blurry photo?
It sharpens soft-but-present detail (and does, adaptively). Genuine motion or focus blur destroys information — no honest tool recreates it. Recapture is the fix.
Why are my night scans always blurrier?
Less light → longer exposure → more hand shake in the same jitter. Brace harder or add light; see scanning in low light.
