How to hold your phone steady for document photos

· Scan quality

Motion blur is the most common capture flaw and the cheapest to fix — no purchase required, just technique borrowed from photographers who shoot handheld at slow shutter speeds.

The handheld technique

  1. Two hands, thumbs and forefingers framing the phone like a little tray.
  2. Elbows tucked against your ribs — arms become a tripod's legs.
  3. Exhale, pause, shoot. The half-second after exhaling is your steadiest moment.
  4. Use the volume button as the shutter if tapping the screen rocks the phone.

Makeshift stands beat skills

  • The mug bridge: phone resting across two mugs, lens over the gap, document beneath — an instant copy stand.
  • Book stack: phone lying on a stack's edge, lens overhanging; raise/lower by the book.
  • Timer trick: with any prop, set a 3-second timer so the pressing finger's wobble dies before capture.

When steadiness matters most

Low light (longer exposures), small text (blur shows first), and older phones (smaller sensors, longer exposures again). If your scans are ever soft, assume steadiness before blaming the camera — it's almost always this.

Frequently asked questions

Is a phone tripod worth buying for scanning?

If you digitise piles regularly, a $15 gooseneck holder makes batch days painless. For occasional scans, mugs and books genuinely suffice.

Do phone stabilisers (OIS) solve this?

OIS helps with small tremors, not with the sway of an outstretched arm. Technique still wins; OIS makes good technique even better.
