HEIC photos to PDF: it just works
· On your device
iPhones shoot HEIC by default — a great format that half the internet's tools still choke on. Document scanning shouldn't require a detour through a converter site (which usually means uploading your document somewhere). ToPDF converts HEIC internally, on your device, as step zero of the scan.
What happens with a HEIC file
- You pick or drop a
.heic/.heifphoto. - ToPDF decodes it in the browser (a converter runs locally — the file goes nowhere).
- The photo's rotation metadata is applied correctly, then the normal pipeline runs: detect, crop, enhance, orient.
- The finished PDF embeds a standard image every reader opens.
Should you switch the iPhone to JPEG?
Not for this. The old advice — Settings → Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible” — costs you storage on every photo you ever take, to solve a problem ToPDF doesn't have. Leave High Efficiency on.
Where HEIC still bites (elsewhere)
Sending a raw HEIC to a Windows colleague or an old web form can still fail — one more reason the deliverable should be a PDF, the one format everything opens. Scan → PDF → share solves the compatibility question permanently for documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is quality lost converting HEIC?
The conversion is a high-quality decode; for document content the difference from the original is imperceptible, and the enhancement step matters far more to the final look.
What about HEIC photos sent via WhatsApp?
WhatsApp converts to JPEG on its own during sending. Whatever arrives — HEIC, JPEG, PNG, WebP — ToPDF takes it.
