How to scan a document to PDF with your phone (no app needed)

· Using ToPDF

You don't need a scanner, and you don't need to install anything. If your phone can take a photo, it can produce a proper PDF — straightened, cropped and cleaned up — in less time than it takes to find a scanner app in the store.

This guide walks through the whole flow with ToPDF, a scanner that runs entirely inside your browser. Nothing you scan is uploaded anywhere, which matters when the paper in question is a contract, an ID or a medical record.

What you need

  • Your phone (any recent iPhone or Android) or a computer
  • A browser — Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox all work
  • The document, on a reasonably flat surface

The first visit downloads the scanning engine once (you'll see a small progress bar). After that it opens instantly, even offline.

Scan it in four steps

  1. Open topdf.online and tap “Tap to choose photos”. You can take a fresh photo with your camera or pick one you took earlier.
  2. Let the auto-crop work. ToPDF finds the document's edges, cuts away the table or background, straightens the perspective and cleans up shadows. If it isn't fully sure about the edges, it shows you the corners first so you can confirm them — nothing gets cropped badly behind your back.
  3. Check the result. The page appears upright with a suggested file name read from the document itself. Rotate or re-crop if you like, or tap Add page for the next sheet.
  4. Tap “Download PDF” — or Share to send it straight to WhatsApp or email on your phone.

Getting a photo the scanner will love

The auto-crop is robust, but physics still applies. Three habits make every scan noticeably better:

  • Contrast with the background. White paper on a dark table is ideal. White paper on a white desk is the single hardest case for any scanner.
  • Even light from the side or above — near a window is perfect. Avoid your own shadow falling across the page.
  • Shoot from straight above, filling most of the frame with the page. Perspective correction fixes an angle, but a flatter shot keeps text sharpest.

Why in the browser instead of an app?

Scanner apps have grown heavy: sign-up screens, subscription banners, watermarks on the free tier — and your documents routinely travel through someone's server for “processing”. A browser-based scanner skips the install and, in ToPDF's case, skips the upload entirely: edge detection, enhancement and the PDF itself are all computed on your device. You can read exactly how on-device scanning works, or check the claim yourself with your browser's network tools — here's how.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no login and no personal information involved. Open the page, scan, download.

Does it cost anything or add a watermark?

ToPDF is completely free and never adds watermarks. There are no premium tiers and no page counters.

Can I use the photos already in my gallery?

Yes — pick any existing photo, including iPhone HEIC photos and pictures saved from WhatsApp. The scanner treats them exactly like a fresh camera shot.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. Every step — edge detection, cropping, enhancement and PDF creation — runs in your browser on your device. Your files never leave your phone or computer.
