Scanning dark paper, colored forms and inverted documents
· Scan quality
Scanner logic quietly assumes bright paper, dark ink. Reality also ships black gift certificates with silver pens, blue carbon copies and government forms on pink stock. A few adjustments keep the pipeline happy.
Flip the contrast rules
- Background: dark documents go on a light surface — a white sheet of paper is the universal stage. Edge detection needs the boundary, whichever direction it points.
- Exposure: phones over-brighten dark scenes; tap the document and slide exposure slightly down so light ink doesn't bloom.
What enhancement does with unusual paper
The measurement step notices when a page isn't a bright-paper document and goes gentle: colour tints are preserved (your pink form stays recognisably pink, gently cleaned), and genuinely dark pages aren't forcibly blasted toward white — which would destroy them. The goal is faithful-and-legible rather than everything-becomes-a-photocopy.
Special cases
- Carbon copies (blue/grey on tissue): back the flimsy sheet with white paper so print doesn't ghost through; light and steady as for faint print.
- Metallic ink: it reflects like gloss — use the tilt trick until strokes read dark, not shiny-white.
- Dark-mode “documents” (screenshots): scan as-is; they're already digital-crisp, and the PDF wraps them faithfully.
Frequently asked questions
Auto-crop struggles on my black certificate — why?
Probably a dark table beneath it. Put it on white; the edges reappear to the detector immediately.
Can I invert a white-on-black scan to save printer ink?
Not in ToPDF — it preserves the document’s actual appearance. Print dialogs and PDF viewers often offer inversion at print time.
