Faint print? How scan enhancement lifts contrast (and its limits)
· Scan quality
Some documents are born faint — dot-matrix invoices, nth-generation photocopies, soft pencil. Contrast enhancement can make them dramatically more readable, provided the capture preserved what little signal exists.
How adaptive enhancement thinks
ToPDF measures each page: how uneven is the lighting, how bright is the paper, how flat is the contrast, how soft is the detail — then applies only what that page needs. Faint print triggers local contrast boosting: paper is pushed toward clean white, print toward solid dark, region by region, so a pale corner and a strong centre both land right. Pages that don't need help are left alone — no cartoonish over-processing. (Deeper dive.)
Feed it signal
- More light, evenly — faint print under dim light is noise; under bright light it's low-contrast but clean, which enhancement loves.
- Dead steady — sharpening faint strokes only works when they're strokes, not smears.
- Fill the frame — thin strokes need pixels.
The honest limits
- Vanished thermal print: nothing there to amplify.
- Yellow highlighter over grey pencil: similar luminance — expect modest gains.
- Extreme noise from dark capture: boosting contrast boosts noise too; re-shoot brighter instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I force higher contrast manually?
ToPDF chooses per page automatically to avoid wrecking normal documents. For an extra push on a stubborn page, improve the capture (brighter, closer) — it compounds with the automatic boost.
Why did one page in my document get processed differently?
Each page is measured and treated individually — that’s a feature: the dim page got help, the good page stayed natural.
