ToPDF

Rotate a scanned page (and why most arrive upright already)

· Using ToPDF

Sideways scans are the classic scanner-app annoyance: the photo was taken with the phone in the “wrong” grip, and the PDF comes out rotated. ToPDF runs an orientation model on every page before anything appears on screen, so pages almost always arrive upright — including ID cards photographed sideways.

Rotating manually

  1. Select the page in the thumbnail strip (if you have several).
  2. Tap Rotate — the page turns 90° clockwise each tap.
  3. Your choice sticks: once you rotate a page yourself, the automatic orientation steps aside for that page, even if you re-crop it later.

Each page rotates independently

Rotation is per page. A landscape spreadsheet in the middle of a portrait report can stay landscape; the pages around it stay portrait. The thumbnail strip shows every page the way it will appear in the PDF, so a quick glance confirms the document reads correctly end to end.

When the auto-orientation gets it wrong

Orientation detection reads the page's text layout. Pages with almost no text — photos, diagrams, handwriting in unusual scripts — occasionally land sideways. That's what the Rotate button is for, and your correction is final. If a page keeps coming out wrong, our orientation troubleshooting guide covers the edge cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate by 180° (upside down)?

Yes — tap Rotate twice. Each tap is 90° clockwise, so four taps bring you back to the start.

Does rotating lose quality?

Rotation is a lossless operation on the rendered page — no repeated compression artefacts accumulate from tapping Rotate a few times.

Why did my page arrive upright even though I photographed it sideways?

A small on-device model classifies the page orientation (0/90/180/270°) right after cropping and turns it before first display. It runs locally, like everything else.
