How accurate is the auto-crop? Honest numbers and the safety net
· Quick answers
Honest answer: on reasonable photos, the crop is right the overwhelming majority of the time — and the design's real promise is different and stronger: when it might be wrong, it asks instead of guessing.
What "accurate" depends on
- Contrast: a page on a dark table is near-certain; white-on-white is the hardest case in the field.
- Clutter and folds: competing rectangles and creases create plausible-but-wrong outlines.
- Framing: all four corners in frame is a hard requirement — software can't crop to a corner the photo doesn't contain.
The checklist moves you into the near-certain regime with 30 seconds of setup.
The safety net, concretely
Every detected outline is scored for geometric sanity and edge evidence — and checked for the nastiest failure, an edge slicing through document content. Confident, clean outlines crop automatically; anything else opens the corner editor pre-filled for your confirmation. So the practical failure mode isn't “bad crop shipped” but “one extra tap” — a trade any document owner should want.
And when it’s still wrong?
Adjust crop, any time, non-destructively — the original photo is retained per page, so a re-crop re-derives everything fresh. Accuracy plus reversibility is the whole story.
Frequently asked questions
Does accuracy improve over time?
The detectors are periodically improved and, being a web app, updates reach everyone immediately — no version fragmentation.
Hardest real-world cases?
White paper on white surfaces, documents under other documents, and heavily folded pages photographed flat-on. All three are also the editor-routing champions — by design.
