Automatic file names: how ToPDF names your PDF from the document
· Using ToPDF
“scan_20260702_113255.pdf” tells you nothing three weeks later. ToPDF reads the page after scanning and proposes a real name — for a passport that's the holder's name from the machine-readable zone; for a letter it's typically the person or title printed on it.
How the suggestion works
After the page is cropped and straightened, on-device text recognition looks for the most name-worthy line:
- Passports and many IDs: the MRZ — those two lines of
<<<-studded capitals at the bottom — is read with a dedicated model and checked against its built-in check digits, so names come out precisely. (What's an MRZ?) - Cards like Aadhaar or licences: the printed name is identified by its position and shape — for example, the line sitting directly above a date of birth.
- Letters and forms: a labelled “Name:” field or a prominent title line.
The suggestion lands in the file-name box with a ✨ marker. It's a suggestion, not a decision — tap the box and type anything you prefer.
Re-suggest from any page
In a multi-page document the name usually comes from the first page. If a later page has the better name — say the certificate is page 3 — select that page in the strip and tap ✨ Suggest name next to the file-name field. The scanner reads the currently selected page and replaces the name.
When no name appears
Handwriting, low-contrast print or pages without name-like text simply produce no suggestion — an empty box beats a wrong guess. Type your own; the “.pdf” is added automatically, and characters that file systems dislike are cleaned up for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text recognition done on a server?
No — the OCR runs inside your browser with a locally downloaded model. The text of your document is never transmitted anywhere.
Does ToPDF make the PDF text-searchable?
No. The PDF contains the cleaned image of the page; recognition is used only to suggest the file name. For most sharing and archiving purposes that is exactly what is needed.
The suggested name has a small mistake. Should I worry?
No — it only affects the file name, never the document image. Tap the box and correct it; your typing always wins.
